1564 COVERDALE letters of Martyrs [ Bible ]
1564 Myles Coverdale, Certain most godly ...letters of Martyrs ...in the
bloodye persecution ...gave their lives; London: John Day, newly rebacked
Myles Coverdale. Certain most godly, fruitful, and comfortable letters of
such true Saintes and holy Martyrs of God, as in the late bloodye
within this Realme, gave their lyves for the defence of Christes holy
written in the tyme of theyr affflection and cruell imprysonment. London:
Day, 1564. 4to, worn old 1/2 calf, marbled boards, newly rebacked; title in
& first leaf of Coverdale's address to 'the Christian Reader' with the
corner torn away (the final 3 pages of this address are missing); there is a
hole in C8 (removing a few letters of text); there is no D8 (pp47/8), but no
missing; there is some soiling & staining & a few tears without loss; there
frequent annotations in 2 early hands, but generally the text is crisp with
(6) 689 (4)pp [complete apart from the defects noted above]
***STC 5886; a scarce mid-16th century collection of the original letters
a number of those martyred (mostly burned alive) in the mid-1550s under
Queen Mary. Coverdale is best known for his work in issuing the first
edition of the Bible in English (in 1535). The letters are by Cranmer,
7 1/8" x 5 1/8"
