PC Magazine this month has a very short article on new implantable
devices that measure blood glucose continuously and without any pricking
of the skin. They are implanted subcutaneously (below the skin) and
attached to some blood vessel. They continuously monitor the glucose
levels and can read them back to an external instrument. This stage is
in lab testing now. The next stage has a reservoir of insulin and can
meter it as needed.

Looks like technology may well make diabetics' lives a lot easier in the
near future.
