[Elfsea] Springfaire

Good Gentles,
Having come off of a major burn-out when the "core" gets tired, I
suggest that each of the "core" grab a (relative) newcomer to assist in
whatever it is you are doing.
I assisted in some major mundane events (i.e. Bluebonnet Homebrew
Competitions). By the time I was finished, I found that I had NO desire
to even look at a bottle of homebrew, let alone start a new batch. (And
I'm talking mead that has to age 3 years for best results.)
We discovered that one of the best ways to get others involved is to ask
for the assistance of a person from another group. If a Ft. Worth Capper
was in charge of placing the orders for prize ribbons, s/he would have a
member of the Dallas group follow around to learn the ropes for next
year's event.
The head of security could have a relative/trustworthy newcomer do the
rounds with him/her. If nothing else, it'll give the new person a taste
of what the job entails. Who knows? S/he might even like it!
I don't tend to sign up for stuff because I like just running errands
for whoever needs them, although I tend to prefer kitchen stuff.

I have attended and enjoyed many Elfsea events and hope to do so in the
future.  I do not live within the environs of Elfsea but support Elfsea
as Elfsea supports my Barony, the Steppes.  I have already volunteered
to assist with set up and will probably do a stint at gate with my
husband as we usually do.

It would appear that Elfsea is facing a problem that is occurring in
Steppes (and probably other places as well) also.  Regardless of how
numerous the Barony's membership is,  there is a "core" group in the
Barony that works every event, does set-up, tear-down, security, gate,
etc., etc.  This situation has been escalating for the past number of
years in both Baronies.   Both Baronies have a large number of paid and
unpaid members  who attend these events  and presumably, enjoy them but
do not volunteer to do anything to assist with the running of the event.
The "core" members run all the Baronial events, and, due to this,
burnout is inevitable.  Therefore, I issue a challenge to those of you
who also love and enjoy the dream.  Volunteer a couple of hours for
security, gate or wherever you are needed.  Many hands do make light
work for all.
