Judah Maccabee was a jewish hero who fought the
Seleucid Empire's(Syria) domination of his people in
about 160BCE. Maccabee means 'the Hammer' and is not a
family name. His father was Mattathias of the
Hasmoneans who lived in the town of Modein not far
from Jerusalem.
