Since several of us ladies are going to wear saris at Warlord this year I
thought I would pass this along from another list.

Free Discover India! Festival May 17 downtown

Date :
Mon, 05 May 2003 10:14:54 -0500

The public is invited to experience the taste, sound, culture, and
visual splendor of India on May 17 in the third annual Discover India!
Festival. The event will be from 12 to 5 p.m. on Flora St. at North
Harwood in front of the Crow Collection of Asian Art, just east of the
Dallas Museum of Art. Admission to the event is free. Call (214)
979-6435 for more information. Discover India is a collaboration of the
Dallas Museum of Art, the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian
Art, the India Association of North Texas, and the Dallas Children's Museum.

Classical Indian dances and Indian folks dances will be performed by
students from Indian dance schools and members of dance troupes in the
North Texas area. Classical Indian music will be played on sitar and
violin by members of the Indian Classical Music Circle. Activities
include a rangoli demonstration (art made from natural materials such as
rice, flower petals, etc.), henna tattooing of the hands, and a
demonstration of the wearing of a sari, traditional Indian dress.
Vendors will provide authentic Indian food. Families will make art
projects such as inlaid mosaic designs, rakhi bracelets, fighter kites,
shell designs, block printing, and rug knots. A sports booth will focus
on the game of cricket.

This year's Discover India! Festival coincides with the Dallas Museum of
Art's recent opening of The Sensuous and the Sacred: Chola Bronzes from
South India, a special exhibition of sublime bronze sculptures created
between the 9th and 13th centuries, a highly creative and productive era
of Indian culture. A highlight of the exhibition is the sculpture of
Shiva as Lord of the Dance, a masterpiece owned by the Dallas Museum of
Art. Visitors can also visit the Museum's new installation of art of
South Asia on the third floor. This installation features Buddhist,
Hindu, and Islamic art from India, Southeast Asia, and the Near East.
