Not entirely.  The exact text of the amendment is:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to
petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That is, the government is enjoined against restricting *anybody's* freedom
of speech, and oh yeah, the press too.  They broke it out that way
specifically to ensure that it was not interpreted as being applied solely
to the press.

Of course, as to freedom from consequences... well, that is certainly not
guaranteed.  Thank goodness!

     I do not agree.   The 1st Amaendmant was desigened to prevent the
Federal and State governments from censoring the press.
