[Elfsea] FW: [Ansteorra] What has happened?

Well put. I think even more to the point than a brochure, though, is to
remember what Her Grace said - we tend to be leery of teaching the virtues
espoused by the Society to newbies. Face-to-face teaching and leading by
example are even more effective than brochures, generally. Though the
saying is meant to apply to much more important situations, it applies here,
too: silence is the death of virtue.

To add to the pot, our Mundane society today's mind set is to do as
little as possible as long as there is a "pay-oof." How many people have
you heard say, "It's not MY job" in the mundane world. Unfortunately, as
Willow stated, our lifestyle has a way of bleeding into our SCA
lifestyle because the concept of giving without always recieving is
culturally foreign to us all. It is a work that we must consciously
strive to do. This striving to do what HAD been and what we SHOULD be
doing as a moral standard has become harder because as others have said,
it is dying. What makes us better people is continueing to go the extra
mile for one another, NOT just in the Kingdom, but in our Mundane lives
as well. If we are successful at this at home, then it becomes more
successful in our SCA lives as well. Our dream truely becomes a reality.
This is what makes people take notice of who we are in our Mundane
society, and causes others to want to join in.
Since not everyone recieves the Black Star, the only thing I could
think of that might help new comers get into this mindset is to have a
brochure that states what we're about, Chivalry and what a model of
Chivalry looks like as well as a list of "rules" to help them know that
they are required to clean up after themselves. I know some of you might
think that others should know these things already, but the truth is
that many don't. Not everyone has training in social graces and are
quite clueless, and others again bring in their mindsets that they will
only do as little as they possibly can.
My humble opinion,
Violet

I hadn't been watching this thread on Ansteorra. But now I've seen it,
I'd like to add a comment.
When the SCA is found by a newbie, it is gloriously fresh, exciting and
different. The values everyone espouses are precious, shining and
noble.
When the SCA is a fun new game to play for a fresh Lord or Lady, where
noble deeds and behavior are expected of others and oneself, it sparkles
with uncommon virtue despite the work that now seems ever more to rear
its head demanding attention.
When the SCA is the "thing to do for social recognition" of the
hard-working scion on the peers' watch-lists, the noble virtues are
commonly practiced, but are no longer so shiny and new. The work
underlying the game isn't always so much fun, and buckets of sweat can
sometimes tarnish the sheen of courtesy or chivalry.
When the SCA is the social life of the well-broken-in old dinosaur, the
virtues have seeped in deep and are no longer noticed as being out of
the ordinary. Rather, they are only noticed in their absence. The
tired snarl becomes evidence of failing courtesy, and "common" chivalry
passes unseen besides its churlish cousin arrogance.
Probably already said somewhere... but it's my take on why so many
organizations in human society echo the same lament: those who've
played long lament that all the wonderful things that attracted them are
lost, while those coming in are agog at the glory of those very things
shining from within those lamenting dinosaurs....

Neigh, neigh. That horse is not old. It has just
been ridden hard and put up wet. Over and over.
Maybe we can take care and do it right this time.
