LOL! Don't forget the statement allegedly made by Benjamin Franklin that
beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy...

"This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which the Lord intended a
more divine means of consumption. Let us give praise to our Maker, and glory
to His name, by learning about BEER."
Friar Tuck
Robin Hood,
Prince of Thieves
If you have an interest in learning to brew, or were just wondering what
goes into the most popular of SCA beverages, come and learn. This will be a
series of classes and hands-on experience. Students will brew their first
batch of beer in class and will also be given books to get them started.
Students will also sample and critique each other's accomplishments. These
techniques apply as well to mead and wine, and all three will be discussed
in class. For obvious reasons, you must be 21 to attend this class.
All classes will be held at Lord Faelan's home, in Cross Roads, TX. Students
will need to purchase some of their own equipment, and all their own
ingredients. Brews will be ready for Gulf Wars!
First Session, February, 3 - Brewing 101
This is a "classroom" session where the basics of brewing are explained.
Student will learn about grain, malts, hops, honey, grapes, equipment,
fermentation, sanitation and basic processes. Beer, mead and wine are all
covered, as well as the differences in brewing each one. Modern and period
beers and techniques will be discussed. Each person will also receive a book
and class notes. Bring a notebook and pencil. Students will be given
equipment and ingredient lists to acquire for the next class.
RSVP by February 5 so that materials can be available. The cost of books is
$10.
Second Session, February 10 - First Batch
Students will brew their first batches of beer. This "lab" class will teach
students the practical side of sanitation and brewing techniques. Fermenters
can be left at Faelan's home.
Third Session, February 24 - Bottling
Students will bottle their beer. Some equipment will be available for use
and won't need to be purchased by students. Proper technique, sanitation,
and how to avoid some of the pitfalls will be covered.
Forth Session, March 10 - Tasting and critique
Everyone samples everyone else's brew and comments and suggestions all
around. If you can't make it to this class because of Gulf Wars, don't
worry, take your brew, and pass it around. No-one turns down brew at war,
and you'll get a lot of feedback.
Class is limited to 6 people, so please RSVP as soon as possible.
YiS,
Lord Faelan
