Read this article and sigh.....

You don't have to be a calligrapher or a bookbinder to appreciate
this small book that was recently bought by the British Library. The
history of the book that was originally put into St. Cuthbert's
coffin (died 687 AD) is fascinating. It dates to the source of the
Lindisfarne Gospels and was moved about the country because of being
under threat from the Vikings on more than one occasion. Later,
important visitors to the monastery were permitted to wear it in a
pouch, would you believe?

Check out this lengthy article and be amazed at the photos......

BTW, the amount of 9 million British pounds is equal to 14.3 million
US dollars.......... paid for St. Cuthbert's Gospel book.

YIS (Yours In Service),

HL Lete Bithespring, scribe and illuminator
MKA (mundanely known as) Elaine Crittenden

PS. Books were so valuable that, at times, hostages were traded for
them. One captured king was traded for one finished book and one half-
finished book. The captors then finished the book, but with
disparaging notations in it about how inept the original scriptorium
was in making it !!
