>A Trip to the National Archives
>
>            You don't have to go to Washington to use the National Archives. The Southwest Archives in Fort Worth (NARA-SW) may not have the Constitution, Bill of Rights, or Declaration of Independence on display, but the new facility in Montgomery Plaza, 2600 West 7th Street, Suite 162 is designed for genealogy and history buffs. The office there can provide computer access to federal census records, military service, passenger arrivals, and American Indian rolls, particularly for the five Oklahoma tribes. There is free access to online commercial genealogy sites, Ancestry.com and others. The staff is helpful and printing copies of records is free.
>            I went there to get help in researching the U. S. Army service of Abram Harris, for whom Abram Street in Arlington is named. He was a soldier in the US-Mexican War and was later assigned to the garrison of Fort Worth when it was an active army post. Records of the veterans of the Mexican War are not available online and must be requested.
>            The center in Fort Worth is in the old Montgomery Ward building that has been converted to a condominium complex with stores on the ground floor. It is on the east face of the building and there is parking. One of the staff provided the forms and helped complete the request. Three weeks later, I received three pages of copies of records for Abram Harris, his enlistment in Utica, NY on January 20, 1847 for five years, his receipt for the $6 bounty for signing up, and his entry on the Register of Enlistments, US Army, in the 8th Infantry, Company F. The last information was his discharge "at Fort Worth (A Sergeant) on January 20 1852 for "Expiration of Service." Tom Cogdell
