<P>Good gentles of Elfsea and her member groups,</P>

<P>There have been questions posted to the list requesting responses from the various Baronial candidates. We decided that the best way for us to answer them, and maybe cut down on the amount of cross posts that needed to be tracked, was for us to tell you about ourselves. We wanted to share how we approach life, decision making and answer some of the questions along the way.</P>

<P>We realized, as we were collecting our thoughts, that many of you do not know us very well. Hopefully, this letter will change some of that. We are "nuts and bolts" kind of people. We look at every situation we are involved with, work, family or a social relationship, and determine what makes it tick. We ask, "How does it work? Is it working well? Does there need to be improvements or are things working well?" Cassandra likes going a step further and actually takes things apart, but we tend to leave that for the workshop.</P>

<P>So, how does this apply to the Barony? From day one, we constantly watched the group and analyzed how things were working. When the Barony needed an office filled, we did that. (Seneschal, Knight Marshall, Exchequer, Finance Committee Chairman, Chronicler and deputy Seneschal) When it was time to do the Baronial budget, William contacted all of the officers. He assisted the new officers in presenting their needs so that their goals could be reached. This is one of the "nuts and bolts" ways we support the various interests of our Barony. We help ensure that the various groups have the funds necessary to enjoy their particular aspect of the Society.</P>

<P>Oftentimes, you will not see or hear us. This is because we are believers in hierarchy or chain of command. Some people refer to this as being a Royalist. However we do not limit this way of thinking to just our Royalty. This is also applied to officers and others with positions of responsibility within the Barony. If we think that there is an issue with how people are being treated, we will go to the nobles or Seneschal and let them take the actions they see fit. If we see an issue with how finances are being handled, we will speak to the appropriate officers or committee. We will not go around people or "blindside" them in public. Everyone deserves the opportunity to save face. Public embarrassment serves no useful purpose.</P>

<P>We never assume that we know everything or that our way is the best way. Part of analyzing everything means that you have to analyze yourself.  If someone comes to us with a question on a topic, we provide what information or resources we have. We will also determine if there is a better source for this person to speak with and direct them there. Of course, the proper way to do this is with an introduction. This is how we handle new people. We greet them, answer what questions we can, find out their interests and get them to people knowledgeable on that subject.</P>

<P>We get along well with people. We listen to people. You may be saying something that we are completely at odds with, but we will still respect your right to say it. We have not formed any house or clan affiliations other that the squire/knight relationship William has with Arthur. This is not due to having any dislike towards that part of the society, it is simply a case of not wanting to divide our loyalties. We have friends in every household within the Barony. Now, part of this is selfish in that the Barony needs all of its households working together if it is going to survive. Factionalism has to stop. We cannot function well if two of the groups are feuding. We hope that by having contacts within all of the groups when tempers flare, we can be a source of resolution.</P>

<P>Cassandra and I want a happy and healthy home. This applies to our personal home and our Barony. We have often thought of playing more on a "kingdom level", but we always find ourselves wanting to spend time with the Barony. We enjoy the people and want to do everything we can to see that they have a happy and healthy home as well.</P>

<P>We will skip over some of the leadership questions, as that has been covered above, and address that Gulf War question. We were involved early on in Gulf War, back when getting close to 2,000 people in attendance was a celebration. Elfsea has always had a challenge with regards to fighting and that is we are too spread out. Many of our fighters are often called to serve in other units at the request of their House Lord or Knight. There have been some instances in which we fought under the same banner, but deals had to be made and they do not always last from year to year. We say that anyone claiming to be from Elfsea or those who choose to play in Elfsea should want to fight under the Baronial banner. We are not suggesting that units should be broken up. The Fray work well as a unit as does Falconrose. We would ask that they, along with others who have a history within the Barony, fight in conjunction with the Barony and that this be a lasting relationship. We would ask that the knights within our lands do the same. Our war practice should not just be the Arthurians and a few others working on formations. It should be an Elfsea practice in which all fighting men and women attend and learn the art of war.</P>

<P>A question was asked about Loch Ruadh and what we would do as Baron and Baroness with regards to their change in status. We would assist them in this endeavor. We would place our trust in the seneschals of both groups that they will negotiate zip codes in good faith. We will trust that the people of both groups will see this as a good move and behave accordingly. Loch Ruadh has served the Barony well. They have been officers, friends and co-workers. They deserve this opportunity to spread their wings and determine their future. We see the change in relationship as purely a "nuts and bolts" change. They will no longer be reporting to a Baronial officer. We will all continue to work together. The friendships will not go away. Look to our relationship with Steppes. The level of assistance that we provide each other is tremendous. We help with their feasts and they help with our arts and sciences. We do not see negatives in this change for Loch Ruadh.</P>

<P>We actually have a larger concern with our other groups. Our relationship with Three Bridges has been strained at times and we have definitely reduced our exposure to the Tor. These are both due to a lack of commitment and communication on the part of the Barony. The only time you see someone from the Tor should not be just at events. We should have a fighter practice in Stephenville every so often. This has been done in the past. If we start taking an interest in them again, maybe they will not feel alone or not part of the Barony. There are many fine people in the Tor, all with good hearts. Please take the time to get to know them.</P>

<P>The Three Bridges relationship needs to be reviewed</FONT><FONT color=#008000 size=2>. </FONT><FONT size=2>The Barony felt the need to see that a group was formed there. Think back to why it was formed. Was it formed because of a need amongst the students to have an onsite SCA presence or was it formed because the Barony had a need? How are we going to move forward? Does this area, in which many of our meetings take place within Arlington or east of Ft. Worth, need a specific College group? If yes, then let’s teach them and support them. A college is typically made up of people eager for learning. We must impress upon them the need for paperwork and schedules. We need to show them the pomp and how the game is played. If no, then we have enough members, who are students, to maintain the campus organization that can reserve rooms for the Barony.</P>

<P>We see one of the largest issues within the Barony as being no sense of ownership among its members. The reasons for this should be explored so that they are recognized and not repeated. People should feel that their voice is heard. We don’t think that everyone really believes that everything will be done to please them. However, they do want to know that their opinion is valuable and that they will be listened to when necessary. We believe that officers and Nobles should be able to provide reasons for their actions. They should be able to explain to someone why they did not use their suggestion. If this is done often enough, people will begin to have trust and be willing to accept when an explanation sometimes cannot be given due to unfortunate circumstances.</P>
