In addition, in case you did not already know----Your machine will automatically slightly gather whichever material is on the bottom. The feed of the machine does this unless you have a special running foot attachment to replace your standard foot. If you use commercial patterns, they take this into account so you always should have the back shoulder piece on the bottom and the front shoulder piece on the top. Also, when attaching collors, have the collar itself as the under material and the neckline you are attaching to on the top.
Doing a slight gathering thread and then pinning is going to help you more than just pinning. Pinning really does not compensate for the action of the feed problem.
If you pin and then place the trim on the bottom side to do your sewing then the feed of the machine will help you to make the "ease".
I just finished a special course in how to make your own patterns and draping garments----This feed problem was hammered into us so the garments would look professional. The newer Pfaff machines have upper and lower feed for the material but all other machines have to have a special attachment to rectify the problem.
