The use of wood shafts for any arrows or bolts is specifically prohibited at
Estrella War XVII.
FIBERGLASS SHAFTED ARROWS:
All shafts shall have a minimum diameter of 1/4 inch solid fiberglass rod.
All fiberglass shafted arrows shall have blunts approved for use with
fiberglass shafts, with a cross section not less than 1 1/4 inch in
diameter.
Acceptable blunts for handbow arrows are: Baldar Blunts, Morak, or UHMW
blunts.
Standard UHMW, tapered UHMW, Fitz-Rauf, and heavy modified UHMW blunts are
all acceptable versions of the UHMW blunt.
UHMW Blunts shall consist of a not less than 1 inch length of 1 1/4 inch
diameter UHMW polyethylene, drilled to a depth of 1/2 inch to accept the
shaft, covered with no less than 1/2 inch of closed cell foam on the
striking surface. All cut edges of the UHMW core shall be rounded off and
the foam shall be of sufficient diameter to completely cover the striking
surface of the blunt.
All blunts shall be secured by at least two strips of 1/2 inch wide
(minimum) good quality strapping tape. These strips shall cross over the
face of the blunt and down the sides, and onto the shaft for at least one
inch. It shall be secured to the shaft by another strip of tape which wraps
around it as well as the base of the blunt and the shaft.
All fiberglass shafted arrows shall have a Full ABD (Anti Bounce-back
Device) with a cross section not less than 1 1/4 inch in diameter. It
shall not be possible to force the knock of the arrow or any part of the ABD
more than 1/2 inch into a legal face guard.
Acceptable Full ABDs for handbow arrows at Estrella shall be: the 1/4 Wedge
foam ABD, and the 1 1/4" UHMW Nock. Other Full ABDs which have been
approved for use by the SCA level marshalate prior to the event shall also
be allowed.
FIBERGLASS SHAFTED BOLTS:
ALL fiberglass shafted bolts shall be the "Fellwalker" ABD bolt design.
NO blunts other than the Heavy Modified UHMW blunt shall be allowed on
fiberglass crossbow bolts. The use of Baldar Blunts, Moraks, Thistle
missiles and all light UHMW blunts on fiberglass shafted bolts is
specifically prohibited.
Fellwalker bolts shall be constructed from the commercial kits or from the
following specifications:
-All shafts shall be constructed from a 12 inch length of 1/4 inch minimum
diameter solid fiberglass rod.
-All blunts shall be of the Heavy Modified UHMW Blunt design. This consists
of a not less than 2 inch long by 1 1/4 inch diameter core of UHMW
Polyethylene, drilled to a depth of 1 inch to accept the shaft.
-All cut edges of the UHMW core shall be rounded off.
-The striking surface of the blunt shall be covered with no less than 1 inch
thick by 1 3/8 inch diameter closed cell foam. The sides of the blunt
centering on the join between the UHMW and foam tip shall be wrapped with
1/8 inch thick closed cell foam (2 wraps of 1 1/4 inch wide x 10 inch long
strip of standard 1/16 inch mailing foam).
-The ABD disk shall be a disk of no less than 1/2 inch thick by 1 1/4 inch
diameter UHMW Polyethylene rod, drilled 1/4 inch deep to accept the shaft.
All cut edges of the UHMW disk shall be rounded off.
-The shaft must be taped with and the core, fully assembled blunt and ABD
must be securely fastened over each end and down onto the shaft with good
quality strapping tape.
The assembled bolt must additionally be covered with either duct, gaffers or
electrical tape. It is required that the shaft and ABD be taped in a solid
base color, and the blunt taped in a bright contrasting color. It is not
necessary to tape a contrasting "X" on the striking surface of the blunt.
Cresting of heraldic colors, if done, should be only on or directly behind
the blunt, to prevent confusion of which end is the blunt.
Fletching is allowed and may be of any standard method approved for SCA
combat arrows (feathers, vinyl vanes, card, foam, etc.). Fletching may
contrast with shaft color.
GOLFTUBE ARROWS AND BOLTS:
All SCA legal golftube arrows and bolts shall be allowed.
It shall not be possible to force the nock of a golftube arrow or bolt more
than 1/2 inch into a legal face guard.
The nock end of the golftube should be plugged or reinforced to prevent
compression. Spray insulating foam is not an acceptable method of
reinforcing golftubes.
