I believe that his Excellency makes some very special points. I would like
to add one more. Bringing the history back involves more the physical
environment It also involves the social environment. Even if you are not
into History and you are living the Dream or Living the SCA or view the SCA
as path to a better you, working on making our physical and social
environment more historical will make your experience in the SCA better.
When we drift to the mundane we shift our thinking away from the ideas were
are studying. Honor, chivalry and courtesy become replaced by the relative
thinking of the modern world. The more real we make our world the stronger
the values of our world.
I was thinking of making a flyer and putting it on cars and mundane stuff.
Of Course that would be rude so I probably will not do it.
Here is my flyer. What do you think about it?
Do you love Ansteorra? Do you love the Dream? Do you think the SCA is a
place of high ideals? Then I would ask you these questions?
Where is your car? Is it hidden in the parking lot or is it a big fat
reminder of the modern world out in the open?
What does your camp look like? Are soda bottles and mundane bags put up? Is
your ice chest covered? Do you have a little bag on your Gatorade bottle? Is
your mundane chair covered? Have you made an attempt to decorate with
banners and things?
What do you look like? Are you wearing tennis shoes or blue jeans? Are you
wearing a T-shirt where people can see it? Is your watch in the open? Are
you carrying your phone in the open? Do you have your drink in a proper
tankard? Are you carrying around a plastic notebook? Are you wearing a
costume that is neon or tied dyed or has cartoon characters on it? Are you
wearing something that screams the everyday world?
How is your behavior? Are you taking phone calls in the open? Are you
talking about your computer? Are you calling everyone by their mundane
names?
Have you been trying to make Ansteorra and the Dream real? Have you been
using peoples titles and SCA names? Are you having conversations about
history, the SCA or your persona? As a Lord or Lady of Ansteorra, even if
you don't have an award, are you modeling the proper behavior that you want
the new members to do? Have you taught the new people about what a true peer
or noble should be doing? You never know who will the next king or peer.
Are you and your group the kind of people and doing the kind of things that
should be repeated over and over again by the new people? We make up
the  Dream! We make up the Kingdom! Each one of us need to support making
our SCA world feel real. You might not realize this but the general populace
has more affect on the newcomers than the nobles and peers. They look to you
as the models. We need to all make an effect. It doesn't need to big, like
having a period pavilion and hand sewed clothes. It can be small. Put up the
mundane and don't talk about the everyday world and show respect to people's
personas. Put up a banner. Give out a favor. Address someone with their new
title. Have some forsoothly small talk. Flirt with someone in a Courtly way.
If we all make a little effort big things will happen.
