<P class=MsoNormal><FONT color=black><SPAN style="COLOR: black">Coldest air in
four years plunging southward through Texas. Arctic cold front has just passed
Dallas and the temp fell from 64 to 36 in about 35 minutes. Amarillo is at 12
with an wind chill of -18. Arctic front is along a line from south
of Dallas to Lubbock and moving south at 35-40mph. Expect a 30-40 degree
temp. drop with frontal passage late this afternoon and early this evening.
Front will reach northern counties by mid-afternoon and be near the coast by
10pm this evening. North winds will increase to near 35-40mph with the frontal
passage resulting in wind chills from 0-15 degrees. Winter Storm Watch is
in effect for all of southeast Texas including metro Houston and the coastal
counties. Temps. will fall below freezing by midnight from I-10 northward,
and remain below freezing for up to 30 hours. Temps will fall throughout
the day Tuesday into the mid and upper 20's and wind chills near zero.
This is a very cold airmass, all precations to protect plants, pipes and pets
should be completed by sundown tonight. New model data this morning indicates a
better chance of freezing rain and sleet for metro Houston. Major ice
acumulations of 1/2 to 1.5 inches is expected along and north of I-10, this will
equal the ice storm of 1997. Precip. will begin to fall Tuesday afternoon and
intensify Tuesday night, heavy freezing rain and sleet will glaze roadways,
trees, and powerlines by midnight Tuesday night. Bridges and overpasses
will become glazed by sunset Tuesday and many roads will be
impassable by midnight. Ice retarting chemicals are currently being applied
to 290, north and west sides of the Beltway, I-10 west, and I-45 north.
Houston public works is loading salt/sand spreading trucks. Ice accumulations
will be great enough to bring down trees and power lines especially north and
west of the Beltway. Coastal counties will change to freezing rain by early
Wednesday morning. Freezing rain and sleet will continue into the day
Wednesday. Travel to central and north Texas is not recommended, and travel
across southeast Texas including metro Houston will become hazardous by
late Tuesday evening. NOW is the time to prepare for freezing temps. and
