Ah, but what about a snowball tourney?  Start with teams of 3 and the losers 
join the winners until you have one team again: the leader of the "winning" 
team is the new brigade commander.  Perhaps with a few "monkey wrenches" 
thrown in for complexity's sake?  One side only polearm and the other only 
shieldmen?  Various scenarios with specific "victories" (capture the flag, 
defend this piece of land for a full 5 minutes, keep alive a specific 
person)

Just a few ideas.  I kinda like the idea of a tournament.  It's just a 
little different in the outcome (a group, instead of an individual).
