Please read it and follow the instructions for providing feedback to the Board before the deadline of a week from Wednesday - 12/1/04. The next item for commentary isn't due until February. Ciao, -- Phelim "Pug" Gervase | "If you don't worry 'bout the future Bryn Gwlad - Ansteorra | sooner or later it's the past Dark Horde Moritu | And if they say the thrill is gone pug at pug.net | then it's time to take it back" --Meatloaf Note: The views do not reflect the SCA nor the Kingdom of Ansteorra. ----- Forwarded message from "Baron, Meg" ----- Greetings unto the esteemed membership of the SCA: A few years ago, the Grand Council gave the Board of Directors a proposal for adding additional sanctions to the rather limited toolbox the SCA currently has for dealing with problem behaviors and problem people. The proposal was put out for comment; however, due largely to its length and complexity, the commentary was decidedly mixed, and the Board did not act on the proposal. Nonetheless, there were some good ideas within the proposal, and the Board has returned to it several times over the past couple of years, seeking a way to take these good ideas and incorporate them into our rules. After considerable rewriting and discussion, the Board has developed a proposal for a change to the "sanctions" sections of the Governing Documents. Unfortunately it has proved impossible to streamline the proposed changes beyond a certain degree; there are too many scattered references in Corpora and the other governing documents to various sanctions that may be imposed by various people. In fact, part of the purpose of this proposal is to bring the language currently contained in Corpora into one place as much as possible, for ease of reference. The Board is seeking commentary from the membership on this new sanctions revision, which is based heavily on the work of the Grand Council as well as input from various Board members and past Royalty. Special thanks go to former Director Fernando Vigil, who did the bulk of the work of assembling this proposal in its final form. This proposed revision is designed with several goals in mind: ? To give additional options to Royalty faced with the challenges of imposing appropriate sanctions. ? To gather the assorted sections of the Governing Documents concerning sanctions together and ensurecompatibility between them. ? To make the rules on sanctions clearer and easier to understand. ? To codify the methods by which administrative sanctions can be applied and appealed. While the proposal is quite lengthy, much of the language is not new; it would simply be moved to a single new "Sanctions" section in Corpora. Rather than try to explain all the changes in one lengthy introduction, the Board felt it would be easier to follow if the explanations were interspersed with the changes, appearing after each proposed change. The changes are listed in the order in which they occur within the current Governing Documents. However, those wishing to focus on the substantive changes should pay particular attention to the proposed new Section X, Sanctions, as that is where most of the actual changes would occur. A complete discussion of all proposed changes, including what moves from where and how remaining passages are renumbered, can be found on the web at www.sca.org (the direct URL is http://www.sca.org/BOD/announcements/commentary.html?id=12), or you may request a paper copy from the SCA Corporate office (PO Box 360789, Milpitas, CA 95036-0789). Following is a brief summary of the proposed changes: SUMMARY OF MAJOR CHANGES ? Creation of new Corpora section X. Many sections of the existing Governing Documents will move here. ? Creation of "Lesser Royal Sanctions": includes the existing Banishment from the Royal Presence as well as a new option, Prohibition of Wearing or Display of the Arms of the Realm. ? Creation of "Greater Royal Sanctions": includes the existing Banishment from the Realm and Absolute Banishment, and adds Withdrawal of Privileges of Rank and Exile from the Realm. ? Requirements for notification of a sanctioned individual are better defined. ? The already-existing rights of officers to impose administrative sanctions are clarified, as are limits to those rights. ? The meaning of the phrase "action of the Board of Directors" in the By-Laws is clarified and defined. Commentary on this proposal is requested by December 1, 2004. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. 5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello? 6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. 7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again. 8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day? 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards. 10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread all tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Vincenzo & Nuala (Due to our recent computer crash, we have lost everyone's e-mail address.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls. 2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas! 3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat. 4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!" -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
