My lady, Francesca,
Sergers, in our type of sewing, are terrific for keeping seam allowances
from fraying once a garment is made, re-enforcing seams in high-stress areas
of a garment, and sewing a garment together in a pinch, as well.
None of this is Period, but darnit, linen does fray!
