Hello

We tried getting two demos together at a local Cinemark and AMC for the second Zorro movie. They were unfortunatley not interested, even though we had some great demos for the opening of "Kingdom of Heaven".

So just FYI, there might be some problems with those theater chains.

    Greetings! and salutations...

Being a recent arrival from Trimaris... I can say for certainty, that all of the ideas put forth in both these missives (below) are fabulous ideas AND have worked wonderously in Trimaris. New Medieval type Themed Movie Demos have been VERY successful over the years. Mundanes think Armored Combat in the theater parking lots is toooooo cool... and FREE Passes for the SCA Participants who garbed up and worked the Demo have generally been the reward from the Movie Theater Managers.... YAY!

Many of the shires way over there in Trimaris put on the "Cook out-Party Demo" thing at public parks... usually about once every three months. Pavilions are put up... a semi formal lyst is held... and the Herald explains what is going on to the crowd of onlookers... Shire Folk bring FOOD, hamburgers hot dogs sodas and desserts, etc... and Craft work TONS of arts and crafts!... etc... And show people what we do besides fighting. And hand them a dog or burger and share (no s--t!) stories...

There has been an ongoing SCA presence (booth) at the Bay Area Ren Faire (Tampa BAY, FL) for decades... LOTS of newbies have come from that effort...

So this response is designed to be a POSITIVE feed back thing-a mah-jig... to encourage Y'all to pursue these ideas... cause they DO WORK!

  Yeeehaw! Good Gentyls....

OOh! Oh! Pick Me! I have some recruiting, and publicity opportunity
ideas! :-)

First idea I have is that there are A LOT of colleges and universities
within Ansteorra. Find out which ones have history clubs, gaming clubs, or
even see how active their history and theatre departments are. Then see if
we can do a demo on campus, and if they have organizations that have common
interests, see about meeting or invite them to an eve nt or something. The
ultimate-long term-goal is collaboration, and hey, maybe even getting a
group started on campus..

Next idea.. contact your local newspapers, news channels or cable
access... invite them to an event, to have them cover it, take pictures,
coordinate interviews with key people.. I did this when I lived in the Far
West, and they absolutely loved it. The reporters really got into it,
taking pictures (they got some really cool shots, too), talking to
people...We got some great exposure (2 full page COLOR story).
Next idea.. Go to the local libraries and put up flyers, and even have a
demo there.. I great time would be during history month or something.

Next idea.. it seems that fighter practices are where we get the most
regular public visibility. So, have one practice a month that's a
"mini-demo".. everyone (even people who aren't fighting) come in garb and
bring some things to display, have informational flyers, business cards, and
a sign up sheed.... Have banners flying (if we don't have banners.. let's
make some!)... Be&
amp;n bsp;noticed! In my opinion, I think a perfect opportunity
(in Central Region at least) to do this would be during joint war practices,
because of all the people who show up.

I'm sure I have more ideas, but this is what I had off the top of my head
when I really should be working. :-)

Does anyone have any ideas for recruiting?

I've been checking around for Renfairs in the state, and there are at least
a dozen. Why don't we have groups out there recruiting? Obviously those
people are interested in the middle ages, they're going to fair aren't they?
Constance is working with the SMU Medieval Studies club and trying to get
people from there. The school has a degree program in Medieval Studies. Why
aren't they ALL members? I don't think you can get more interested people
than those that have plan to devote their careers to the study of medieval
history.

In Caid, when each of the Lord of the Rings movies came out they put groups
in many theaters, in garb, to spread the word. It worked out well too. We
should be doing that whenever a medieval movie comes out. Who knows, the
theater manager might even be nice enough to give us free tickets and
munchies like they did for LOTR. :-)

Are there Octoberfest celebrations around here? What other festivals could
we benefit from?

Vicar Miguel had the idea of forming dedicated "demo parties" that
would
have a wealth of information available to them, good quality garb, and much
information to share that could go to different events, set up a table, and
recruit. I think this is a great idea and all Baronies should consider it.
I'm sure the Hospitaliers would appreciate the help.

Just food for thought,
Faelan
