Sine, Janis, or Ansteorra Needleworks:

Try using a metal crochet hook, size 10 to 14 (the smallest).  I've done
some samples up with a size 12 and DMC spool gold metallic thread and they
came up very nice, even without the tambour hoop (I substituted a
large (8-10") regular embroidery hoop).
