Here's yet _another_ idea...

I'll spare the chemistry discussion unless you're just dying to 
know, but ....

In theory, most stuff is soluble in either water or oil.  If water 
didn't work, see if oil (like... cooking oil, not motor oil) might do 
the trick.  Then you could use soap to release the oil from your 
work.  Definitely a test-piece kind of experiment.
