HNW - entre deux

Can anyone tell me about the origin of the factory-produced trim known as entre
deux?  (I've seen various spellings.)  I am mostly interested in finding out if
it was an imitation of a style of hand embroidery, and if so, where it
originated.  I would be grateful for any information.
