Here are some great sources for knitting patterns:

        www.kniton.com
                Go to the KnitList Patterns pages, under
                the third link from the bottom, which is
                called something completely non-intuitive

I think the first one has the knitted-mail-shirt pattern, or a link.

They are also on the Knitting Webring, and you can browse forever finding
patterns that people have posted to their websites.  Some pre-1900, most
not.  There are a couple sites that specialize in "historical" knitting,
which is usually 1940's and backwards, but I don't have the URLs handy.
