You can also use linen as "waste canvas."  I know this sounds terrible -- 
who'd want to waste a good piece of linen that way?  But if you're 
embroidering on, say, cotton, you can actually use a cheap piece of linen as 
a waste canvas to guide your stitches!  When you're done, just pull away the 
linen, thread by thread.  :-) Mary
