As previously mentioned, single strand is best for blackwork.
As per the fineness or boldness of the line you want:
Silk was most commonly used for blackwork. Twisted silks lay down a bold
line, flat silks very fine. If you're on a tight budget, you can also use
sewing thread for fine work, or even DMC, with very nice results.
Test all threads for colorfastness first.
