HNW - grounds for needlepainting

So here's a few questions for the needlepainters in the crowd: given your 
choice of a ground fabric(s) what would you use?  What fiber, weight, weave 
and finish?  Do you prefer a single layer with a heavier body or do you 
prefer a lighter fabric which is then backed with another fabric?  What do 
you back with?

This is so cool to have other needlepainters to talk to...
