You paint the design on the fabric in permanent ink and maintain a cartoon
off to the side. Then when you have the gold all couched down (or at least
the section you're going to work on next) you can peek in between the
couching threads to find the outline of your pattern, and you can refer to
the cartoon for more precise information. There is a nice picture of a
piece in progress in "The Art of the Embroiderer" - I don't have the book
here but can find the page if you like.
