A bit later, but still quite interesting: the National Trust (GB) has an
18c (circa 1790) map of England and Wales that's entirely embroidered in
silk thread (outline stitch)  on silk satin. Every county line is there, as
well as every county names (there were a lot in 1790), as well as major
city and river names.

It's on display at Fenton House, in Hampstead.
