Hello Julia,
I, too am a former SCAer.  I'm afraid too much political / egos sent me 
running!  But  I love blackwork!  And the Tudors.  Where do you live?  If by 
some miracle we live reasonably close together I could show you first hand 
how to do black work.

It is basicly over two threads, under two threads... ekking out the outline 
of the design.... well that's an over simplification... but thats the idea.
