This is a great book, I agree. I have the 1936 edition which I use a lot. Another helpful book is Constance Howard's Stitches.

I'm a bit behind things, obviously, but I just picked up a paper back copy of the revised edition of Mary Thomas Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches (ISBN:1570761183, Trafalgar Square Pub, 1998. $19.95 paper). All I can say is WOW!!!! It's Fabulous! Every stitch under the bloody sun and more! Inspriational and very visual. Excellent diagrams and directions.
The Newer Dorling Kindersley Stitch Sampler( ISBN:70789446286. DK Pub, 1999. $19.95 HC) is not bad either. I teach beginning freehand embroidery classes at events and the Thomas book is now my essential bring along, the Stitch Sampler has nice visuals for the basics and is a great book for someone who has never done this before.
Have a terrific holiday!
