Hi Avien

I would not put cross stitch decoration on your
costumes, but how about doing some beading, and
combining that with a pattern done in stem, chain and
split stitches?   

Blackwork could, in essence, be used: simply use a
nice little border pattern round the neckline and
stitch it in a contrasting thread to your gown.  

Or even some simple couching round the necklines can
be very effective as well.

What sort of pattern were you looking at using?
