[HNW] Gilt Pearl Purl #3

Dear Needleworkers.
I am occupied piecing together the embroidered suit from 1770. I have 5
yards of gilt Pearl Purl # 3 and i wanted to use this as a kind of piping in
the edges of the jacket, along the collar, cuffs and the jacket sides.
How do i do this?
Should i whip stitch it along the edges, and wich thread should i use. I
have gold thread, but would couching silk be better?
I would apreciate any help most greatfully.
