Begging the obvious, but it's just a particular style. It's not meant
to close in front--think of things like some coats on 18th c. gentlemen,
or the reoccuring fashion in my lifetime, certainly, to wear a coat or
jacket "open."
--sue, who got into late-16th c. costuming so she had something to put
her embroidery *on*! <g>
