I am also looking for a pattern that was published in Family Circle or
Woman's Day magazine in the late 1970s or early 1980s.  >>

Go to the local public library and check the craft section for books 
on crochet.  You'll probably find plenty, and many will be from the 
70s, with plenty of patterns (some incredibly unattractive) to choose 
from.
