You might console yourself with the thought that these ladies had been
hand sewing all their lives- 12 stitches to the inch was something they
had to work up to as well. Maybe you can pass yours off as an
"apprentice" piece?

That's what I was afraid you folks would say (I got several responses on

h-costume to that effect).  I can manage 6 without much trouble, but 12 
will be something to work my way into.  I may settle for 10.
