No, silk stitch is basically stem stitch but at a 90 degree angle.  It's 
very common in Chinese embroydery.

OOPS!  I meant satin stitch.

I use the one for free style embroidery.  I've had people think that I did 
zig-zag stitch with a machine to do that stuff.
