Cotton is very labor intensive. slavery and open spaces made it more
profitable in the US, not as many slave were shipped to england. I live
in zone 7, cotton fields can be found 30 miles north of my home. All of
england is zone 8 or 9. Amsterdam is zone 7, France is zone 7-9, Italy
is zone 8-9, and some coastal area zone 10<tropical Florida type climate>
you can grow bananas there<they don't, but you can>.
IMHO, everyday things tend to be forgotten, because "everyone knows about
that". only the special things survive. look at Pompeii, lots of things
showed up there that no-one had guessed had been around. More so in
Hurculenium<the port of Pompeii>, where the merchants lived
I have sent and recieved packages worldwide. Last year, a box of
antiques from China, NO Duty. 2 Years ago Diamonds, and other gems from
Thialand, no duty. in july I got a box of opal from British Columbia
Canada, no duty. 3 years ago boxes sent to england, south africa,
phillipines, Malta, The Neatherlands, Sweden, Brazil, Canada, and
recieved from the same, no duty.
I get marizipan and chocolates every year from Belguim, no duty. The
Roman coin I gave to the Baron christmas 2004 shipped from england the
week before, duty free. same week I recieved 12 coins from Cyprus, duty
free. The list goes on for at least the last 10 years, some listed as
gifts, others shipped by merchants.
I think maybe you got a dirty customs clerk. only time I have
encountered import duty was if bought for resale, and usually not even
then unless you buy a very large quiantity.
just my experiences. FYI: Dale Elliott, Owner, "Red Road Trading
Company, Inc" since 1985. Did the Native Norath American Pow-Wow
Curcuit for more than 15 years. Company still exists, but not actively
at this point<my health doesn't permit>
temp : IIRC they believe 4 degrees C, worldwide.

two different Products???? to try to get the original post
anserered???? Somethign about a cotton Fleece Cloak???????
> Seems unlikely that if something can grow here that we would pay
> have it shipped from the other side of the world. Just my opinion.
cotton was not grown in England, Germany, what is now Finland or
Sweeden, or Scotland... was it???? Or we would have more extant
pieces in museums......
You pay "shipping costs" on stuff you order from e-bay.. Which can
really be outrageous! or over the net anything mail order.....
don't you???? even cross the US.....
I talked with My Hi=uband and he agrred with my other frienid about
duty taxes.. He ordered a book from a local comic shop in teh city
in MI where I am from when we were dating.. My Brother Snail
mailed it to him. Being nice and geting it to him as quick as
posible....... includig postage it cost maybe $5.OO US then Hubby
gets a memo from customs saying he has a package he need to pick up
the duty on it was $15.00 CDN..... which even withthe Excange rate
was still over the initial cost plus postage.
I was just wondering if there may not have been someone(s) trying
to make an extra buck either Govt sanctioned or otherwise......
and imposing a similar type of thing a tax or dutyof somekind.....
People have to earn a living right???? possibly causing costs to
rise.. for those . should cotton really be as expensive as current
> remember 400 years ago thier was a time when the avarage tempature
By How Much higher????
grapes grew in scotland, I head they still do... (but that is
heresay no documetantion one way or tuther)
and english wines were the bane of the
LOL Bet the French have never forgotten that!
Not being argumetative just trying to get more af an Idea and how
to develop current thougths or change them......by gathering more
data, infor a dn stuff.....
Anyway Theories are just that Theories and Idea that is widely
accepted.... Over Time they change.. as more Facts and eveidence
are dicovred and available..... that is teh Cool thing....
