It's embroidered silk (with silk thread, gold thread, and pearls).  There's no indication of what the core of the etui is made from, but I'd guess that it's wood of some sort (based on the appearance of http://www.photo.rmn.fr/LowRes2/TR1/G7GO5/99-016979.jpg at least).
