[HNW] Oxburgh snails

Thu Jun 14 14:21:34 PDT 2007

I have some charts from the Oxburgh hangings here:
Not a lot, though, and not the snails, sorry!

Subject: [HNW] Oxburgh snails

You can see the snail in black-and-white on page 116 of "The Needlework of Mary
Queen of Scots" by Margaret Swain (1986, ISBN 0-903585-22-7) There are
trees-in-octagons on pages 108 (palm) and 109 (chestnut?).
A pear-tree-in-octagon in black-and-white, with accompanying graph, on pages
75-78 of "A Treasury of Embroidery Designs" by Gill Speirs and Sigrid Quemby
(1985, ISBN 0-7135-2056-1).
A cherry-tree ( think)-in-octagon is shown in color on page 21 of "V & A
Needlepoint Collection" by Karen Elder (1992, ISBN 1-85470-124-X).
The oak leaves panel from Hardwick Hall is shown in color and graphed on pages
44-49 of "Classic Needlework" by Imogen Stewart (1992, ISBN 1-85170-943-6).
Six of the bushes/flowers/grasses-in-octagons, in color, are on page 59 of
"Elizabethan Treasures" by Santina Levey (1998, ISBN 0-8109-6353-1).
I would love to learn of any other books with pictures or charts of the Oxburgh
and Hardwick embroideries.
