Problem with silk: pinpricks/holes from needles, in general not enough
strength to support stumpwork and goldwork.

According to my handy dandy Sewing Encyclopedia here
"The Sewing, Stitch and Textile Bible" by Lorna Knight
Kraouse Publications, A Quarto Book, 2007,ISBN 10; 0;89689-527-0
p.15

You might think about using weights instead of pins, or use Bridal pins and
use
a sharper pointed embroidery needle which will not cut the fabric
leaving holes. .

Also, what kind of silk are you using? Silk Organza? Habotai? Thai Silk?

Don't know whether you have seen these articles online or not but here are
a couple of good references for you.

hoping you "stumple" :) across something that will help in these.
