I used to own the Mary Gostelow book on Russian Embroidery. I also use to 
own an exellent book on Ukranian embroidery by a woman whose last name is 
Kmit.

IIRC, there were photos of nyzynka, and it was pattern darning. This makes 
sense given the description of working from the back but with a pattern on 
the front.

Pattern darning is quite old.  It seems to imitate weaving, which we know is 
quite ancient.
