Hi Rachel,
No definitely not in the US we are in Australia, hence the problems getting the wool at a reasonable cost. The biggest craft
store here doesn't even HAVE crewel wool of ANY variety. i have DMC
cotton and DMC tapestry wool only. (really a pain)
i can get the
appletons cheap online, but i don't know what colours as i can't see the wool :-)
most difficult
:-)
thanks for your
ideas,
Regards,
Sarah
Hi all (third time posting sorry i think i am having email vs. account problems )
First post not sure if this is correct place or not.
please forgive me if it posts somewhere stupid (this is my second
attempt sorry)
Just worked out
how to get on the list (thanks Megan)
If i get the Renaissance
wool (which i love beyond all things) i would want to get hanks of the
colours. for me that is about $80-90au for just 5 colours which is
rather pricy for a uni student. (postage on top don't forget which is a
bit)
I was wondering about the Appleton's crewel wool because i
can get that a little cheaper off ebay for about $50 all up. for a
slighter greater length.
Has anyone used the Appleton's for this
type of work. If you have and it was sort of ok has anyone got a colour
list. I will have to order over the net without having seen the colours.
i have started a little trial one in cottons, which i will turn into a pouch for my dad
for his birthday i think. (pictures here http://borninthewrongage.blogspot.com/ )
Anyway love some ideas / colour suggestions from the
Appleton's range.
Thanks very much
Sarah

I would also had, having bought wools direct from Renaissance Dyeing in the past, if you are ordering in bulk they sometimes give you a discount of around 10%. http://www.renaissancedyeing.com/
Another really good supplier of naturally dyes wools is the Mulberry Dyer, can't remember off the top of my head how her prices compare to Renaissance Dyeing but she has an amazing range of colours and her naturally dyed fabrics are amazing. http://www.mulberrydyer.co.uk/
I am assuming you are in the US, both of these businesses price in GBP and with the exchange rate so good it will be alot cheaper than normal at the moment.
not a plug as such but I have used both and these are my naturally dyed wool suppliers of choice.
Rachel

Please keep in mind that the wool colors we see today are NOT exactly the same as when they were embroidered. The terracotta was originally dyed with Rose Madder root. The color comes close to being the rosy color of the veins in port wine cheese which is a lively color. In fact, all the colors of the tapestry in question were brighter. When you go to choose your wool decide whether you are going for the look as it is now or the one way back when. I hope you post photos of your work in progress. I know we would all enjoy seeing them!
Much Luck!
Joellen

I'm not sure why, there are only five main colors in the entire tapestry, along with a few other colors. According to David Wilson, the colors are terracotta, blue-green, an old gold, olive green, and blue. Two other colors--a dark blue or black and a sage green--appear in some places. Later (nonperiod) repairs were done in light yellow, orange, and light greens.
This is my particular favorite source for Bayeux Tapestry information mainly because of the color plates; the tapestry was photographed in natural light so the colors are very true. I had pretty good luck using a DMC color chart to match the colors from the Wilson plates; they weren't all exact but very close. DMC doesn't make their tapestry wool any more, that was my preference for laid work.
Good luck!
Gabrielle
