It looks like the long armed cross stitch to me.

Can anyone give me a reference that shows how to do this stitch?

It translates from the Italian as something like the spiny fish 
stitch.  The example I'm looking at is 
http://www.mfa.org/collections/object/punto-a-spina-pesce-72151 which 
is accession number 93.196 in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
