Edited to say - which could be a herringbone. Spiny fish would make sense for herringbone.

That was my first impression as well, but copying and blowing it up, 
it does not look right.  It looks more like some kind of bulky chain 
stitch.  Both sides of a row are symmetrical, not alternating in 
length as with long armed cross.

It seems to stand up from the fabric quite a bit.
