There is a thriving virtual "community" of people re-creating historical knitting, including that of the 19th century. The HistoricKnit group is a great place to start.

If you are on Ravelry.com --and it's free to join -- I know there are many Ravelry groups with this sort of focus. Go to Groups and search on "historic" and you will find both general historic knitting groups and ones specializing in different centuries. There are also pointers to many sources of historic patterns in books and online. Ravelry is a terrific resource.
