Actually, those techniques go much farther back than the 15th
Century. In Margrethe Hald's book, "Ancient Danish textiles from Bogs
and Burials" (English edition, 1980), page 284, those very same
techniques are illustrated (see text on pages 282-285). Some of
these items go back to the Bronze Age, 2nd millennium BCE.
