TALLAGE - A tax feudal dependents paid to their overlords, variously
computed based on the amount of land held. Varieties include Michaelmas
Tallage (paid at Michaelmas), incoming Tallage (paid at the arrival of a new
lord), Heriot (paid to the lord at the death of the Villein), Merchet (paid
by the villein at his daughters marriage), Relief (when taking over a new
landholding), and wood penny (for the right to gather dead wood for
heat/cooking). The church taxed in similar manner, collecting a Tithe (one
tenth of the value of crops or chattels) and other taxes such as a mortuary
(at the death of a parichoner).
