[Hellsgate] Thoughts

Grüße, Stephan!

I don't think you really need to know the language to adopt a persona in a
certain region. I've known people with Russian, Scandinavian, even Arabic
personae, who didn't know the languages in question. I already knew some
German when I decided to go with a German persona, but outside of a few
phrases like "Guten Morgen!", "Guten Tag!", "Auf Wiedersehen!", "Danke!"
and "Bitte!", everything else is pretty superfluous.

I've never recommended anybody use Rosetta Stone. That's an awful lot of
money for a product that promises easy answers to language instruction.
There are no easy answers. If anybody ever offers some, my advice is to
turn and run.

Maybe a German phrase book (German for travelers, or something like that)
would help. And you can always bend my ear. Teaching German is what I do.
And you probably won't get PERIOD German from anything that's offered for
sale, unless you run across a "Mittelhochdeutsches Wörterbuch" (I have a
copy), and even knowing Modern German doesn't make that dictionary
user-friendly.

I'll keep my eyes open. If I see anything that might be of use, I'll give
you a buzz.

Yours in these Current Middle Ages,
Detlef von Marburg, CSM
