unto Lord Talon greetings
The society has registered all manner of colored oaks
over the years.
Black Oak Keep, Incipient Shire of was registered in
November of 1990.
Anna of Dark Oak was registered in March of 1990.
Anne Chavelle of Silver Oak was registered in July of 1992.
Charles of the Red Oakes was registered in March of 1984.
Chenan of Grey Oaks registered in April of 1982.
Christopher of the Golden Oak was registered in
January of 1983.
This evidence for black woods and white oaks should
allow the formation of Black Oak as a surname or place name.
Woulfe Irish Names and Surnames page 494 under O Dara
gives a name meaning "Black of the Oak"
Reaney & Wilson Dictionary of English Surnames page 489
under Whittock gives John Wyttok dated to 1327 and
Joseph Whiteoak dated to 1704.
Page 47 under Blackwood dates Robert Blakwode 1384.
Adrian Room, Dictionary of Irish Place Names page 45
entry Derrybawn, in Gaelic - Doire Ban meaning white oak grove.
I have not been able to find a date of origin on the Black Oak
River in county Mayo, Ireland.
Another possible angle:
Shire of Black Oak Keep - Even though this shire is no longer
with us the name still remains registered for use as a locative
such as Talon of Black Oak Keep. The original documentation
for the shire's name for Black Oak in the November 1990 LoAR
shows it passed without comment.
Talan should be no problem.
Woulfe Irish Names and Surnames page 676 entry Talun
gives Tallon as son of Talon a Norman name.
MacLysaght, Surnames of Ireland page 282 gives Tallon
as a Hiberno-Norman name.
Tell Talon he is forgiven for all the arrows he has sent
my way while fighting.
yours in service
Magnus von Lubeck
