Then I screwed up and misintrepreted X.3. by relating it to X.1 and X.2.
Daniel fixed it:

He's right, of course.  And remember, try everything else first unless
you're completey certain you understand X.3.  (Heck, do it anyway.  It's
good practice.  :)
